The oxygen concentration used in plateau oxygen enrichment differs from that of medical oxygen.

According to national pharmacopoeia regulations, the concentration of medical oxygen must reach 99.5%. This standard ensures the high purity and safety of medical oxygen for clinical use. In addition to the strict requirements for oxygen concentration, the national pharmacopoeia also mandates that the carbon monoxide content must not exceed 0.005%, the carbon dioxide content must not exceed 0.01%, and the water content must not exceed 0.0067%. These limits are all designed to ensure the safety and effectiveness of medical oxygen.

However, in practical use, the human body cannot tolerate pure oxygen; generally, the oxygen inhaled is diluted. Currently, it is recognized that a reasonable range for oxygen concentration in high-altitude areas is between 23% and 28%. By simulating the oxygen content at lower altitudes and considering the difference from the actual altitude, it is recommended not to exceed an elevation of 2000 meters, meaning the increase in oxygen concentration should not exceed 6 percentage points.

Based on extensive analysis of human or clinical oxygen concentration needs, medical oxygen with an oxygen content of over 90% can satisfy the treatment and prevention of hypoxia. However, in accordance with the quality standards for medical oxygen and oxygen-enriched air set by the National Food and Drug Administration, oxygen must first meet the relevant regulations for oxygen concentration and then comply with the regulations regarding the content of impurities and harmful gases in the oxygen. Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously for it to be considered medical oxygen or oxygen-enriched air.
